ParentDashboard is a Social Purpose Enterprise (SPE)

WHAT THE HECK IS A SOCIAL PURPOSE ENTERPRISE?!

ParentDashboard isn’t your everyday company.

This company was founded by parents who saw gaps and shortages in the government and non-profit systems that support complex needs families like theirs.  They wanted to help others in a way that would not rely on charity or government grants, but also be able to reduce parent costs, generate additional funds, and build real-life tools that help the daily life of families with complex needs kids.  This is neither the business model normally used in a “for-profit company”, nor for a “non-profit / charity” and that’s ok.  Its a hybrid!

The BC Centre for Social Enterprise in Canada has the following definition of a SPE:

Social enterprises are revenue-generating businesses with a twist. Whether operated by a non-profit organization or by a for-profit company, a social enterprise has two goals: to achieve social, cultural, community economic and/or environmental outcomes; and, to earn revenue.  On the surface, many social enterprises look, feel, and even operate like traditional businesses. But looking more deeply, one discovers the defining characteristics of the social enterprise: mission is at the centre of business, with income generation playing an important supporting role (from The Centre for Community Enterprise)

WHAT IS PARENTDASHBOARD’S SOCIAL PURPOSE?!

ParentDashboard is here to fill gaps, not replace existing organizations or supports.  ParentDashboard has developed enterprises from which it will apply its profits to its own programs to directly support its “customers” – the families who use its services.  We also hope it will eventually fund key charitable and non-profit organizations or community initiatives who directly and indirectly service the complex needs sector.  We also hope to fund special projects and activities that charities are not permitted to undertake, such as legal advocacy for common purpose or systemic changes. Finally, we want to ensure workers and providers currently at the whim of a government-funding dependent gig-economy can have stable opportunity without bankrupting parents or putting their practices at risk.
