FAMILY SERVICES ASSOCIATE (RESPITE / BI / EA) JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Job Purpose Summary: The position supports parents of children with complex care needs with respite, behavioural intervention and/or homeschool delivery as required, including life-skill development and logistical support as arranged between the family and ParentDashboard Parent Liaison.  The position also supports internal team functions via shared Duties when not servicing clients.

Rate of Pay: $23.50 – $25 per hour

Location: Work is driven by service request location, and depending on needs of individuals served, and required activities.  ParentDashboard services are mobile, and teleworking and driving should be expected on an as needed basis.

Core Job Duties:

  • Communicate daily with supervisor and team, and attend meetings with parents and team as directed / required
  • Respond to supervisor and management directions to support identified family needs, sometimes on short notice
  • Represent the company professionally as an employee as you fulfil client service needs as directed, including but not limited to respite, social or lifeskill development, behavioural intervention, homeschool or other learning delivery, support recreational and community activities
  • Communicate with and take direction from the Parent Liaison to facilitate smooth transitions for parent, child and worker
  • Back up your teammates, on short notice if required
  • Lead “Pods”  (client support and/or skill groups) as directed
  • Coordinate and implement client programs as set out by parents and professionals
  • Develop therapeutic relationships with client, parents, consulting professionals and ParentDashboard staff
  • Communicate with and coordinate between members of parent-selected support team (home, school and community resources)
  • Monitor and report activity using online forms 
  • Assist clients during emotional outbursts using non-physical crisis intervention strategies
  • Constantly identify and be vigilant to observe client behaviour levels (verbal, non-verbal and par verbal) that contribute to escalated emotional outbursts and adjusts plans on a continual basis  
  • Facilitate client’s social, emotional and academic development including learning emotional management skills 
  • Dispense medication as directed by physician and maintain accurate drug administration records as required
  • Provide transportation for clients to and from appointments and activities, or as directed by supervisor
  • Be responsible to ensure health and safety of clients during service delivery
  • Supervise client and maintain order and safety in homes and a variety of settings in the community, and respond to emergency situations per protocol
  • Exercise sound judgement in dealing with a variety of situations and considerable initiative, empathy and understanding of the many and varied conditions/issues faced by behaviorally challenging clients
  • Model and demonstrate restitution skills and methods for restorative practises 
  • Compile information and materials for meetings with parents 
  • Organise, prepare and duplicate a variety of educational aids and materials
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Team Related Support Roles and Accountabilities: 

When not working directly with clients, employee will maintain productivity by contributing to shared tasks of the team, such as: 

  • Support of the management team with assigned administrative or marketing tasks
  • Assist with promotions or logistics on geographical or digital events, as assigned
  • Client outreach or surveys, or marketing contacts as directed
  • Organising, cleaning, or conducting inventory of equipment and materials
  • Build individual skills by undertaking training and/or research as directed
  • Participate in the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee as an Employee Representative as assigned in the rotation.
  • Help the team create and maintain a positive internal culture via assigned team building activities
  • Help cover other workers on vacation or sick in time sensitive way

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 education
  • Clear vulnerable sector record check with BC Criminal Records Review Program as condition of employment, or willingness to obtain that themselves as a condition of employment
  • Provision of proof of vaccination, and willingness to wear masks in a family’s home
  • Valid BC drivers licence with clear driver abstract
  • Strong work ethic with ability to follow protocols or directions
  • Ability to be flexible, adapt to changing circumstances, exercise judgement
  • Physical and mental fitness that will permit them to be active and energetic 
  • Valid First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain that themselves as condition of employment

Preferred candidates will also have: 

  • Degree in related field OR an ECE or similar accreditation with 1 year experience in caring for children (preferably groups of children) OR 5 years of experience in childcare or education
  • Ability to use laptop, smart phone, common office programs (Google Docs) with knowledge of or willingness to train on required apps (social media, Trello, Jane, Zoom)
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training or other relevant training 
  • Experience working in the homes of complex needs families
  • Experience delivering homeschool curriculum
  • Responsible / mature outlook
  • Special needs parenting experience or demonstrated interest in child and youth / family development or advocacy for inclusion / human rights / education access
  • Interest in community inclusion of special needs children
  • Commitment to long term support of families in a permanent full time capacity
